WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...
Tristan Crowe (NI Chart.com & NvTv Music) picked -
1. Skibunny - LaFaro Tuppeny Nudger Remix (by Richard Davis)
2. Red Organ Serpent Sound - In Search Of Orgasmuz
3. Oppenheimer - Breakfast In New York (by Brian Philip Davis)
"The Richard Davis video just works so well with the Skibunny remix of LaFaro's classic tune that we had to have it for our top pick and just pips ROSS as our favourite. ROSS are such a visually stunning band and this video (which was made quite a few years ago) really shows the potential that the band have. The Oppenheimer video is really simple but again suits the track incredibly well and brings out the personallity of the band. Brian Philip Davis is one of our best short film makers, which makes the simple approach to the video even more interesting."
Davy Matchett (Oh Yeah Music Centre & Only Gone Records) picked -
1. Dutch Shultz - It Bends In The Middle (by Will McConnell +
Martin Bolton)
2. Tom McShane - Scene At The Citadel (by Richard Davis)
3. Cashier No.9 - I Kid You Not (by Barry Cullen)
"Cashier No.9's video smells of America, just where their sound belongs.
The Tom McShane video should be used as a counter-advert for the
Northern Ireland Tourist Board. There is the beauty of Dundrum Castle
and Murlough Bay, the unknown secrets they contain and a train journey
to put people off the scent of the eventual location. Don't tell too
many folk how glorious life is that side of newcastle, we would not
want everyone knowing. But the Dutch Shultz video is just wow!! Imagine
a Northern Irish band's video being erotic! Dear me who would have
thought it. I dare ya to stop watching it before it is over. Bold and
visually captivating. It leaves you wanting to find out more about the
band which surely is the x factor when it comes to music videos?"
Will McConnell (Bandwidth Films) picked -
1. Clown Palour - Rabbit (A Guilty Sweat) (by Richard Crothers)
2. Kyron & The Strangels - You You You (by Steven Mullan)
3. Our Krypton Son - Catalonian Love Song
"I'm a really big fan of Richard Crothers - especially when he works
with Mike Mormeecha. They both seem to be working on some other level
totally separate from anyone else, and they don't seem to care if
anyone notices - at least that's how it comes across. I don't know many
other amateur directors (forgive the term), working with an unsigned
band, who would direct a ten-minute silent film that looks like Jan
Svankmajer directing Paris Hilton's sex tape"
Richard Crothers (Filmmaker + Panic Dots Podcast) picked -
1. In Case of Fire - Enemies ( by Radar Music Videos)
2. Cashier no 9 - When Jackie Shone (by Barry Cullen)
3. Clown Palour - Rabbit (A Guilty Sweat) (by Richard Crothers)
"Been loving the In Case of Fire video since it came out! Really goes well with the
tune. I love these new styles of animation coming out. Its nice to
see creative things happening even when its high budget. There's something about the Cashier No.9 video that makes me love it. Its
trashy and kinda just slammed together. It's ballsy using a video like
this to promote a single. Its punk rock and i love it! i had to pick Clown Palour, i did make this video, but it is one of my favs. I'm
not blowin' smoke up my own ass.. i actually like it loads. Maybe i just
like it cause i know its just how i wanted it to turn out. 10 min long
video for a four and a half minute song. It has a lot of style and
wouldn't be half as good if the tune wasn't so great."
Andrew Ferris (Smalltown America Records) picked -
1. Oppenheimer - Breakfast In New York (by Brian Philip Davis)
2. Red Organ Serpent Sound - In Search Of Orgasmuz
3. The Jane Bradfords - The Evening Angels Gather Here (by Will McConnell & Michael Gibson)
"The Oppenheimer one is a killer track and the concept proves that ideas always win out over dollars. ROSS placed a huge amount of importance on the visual presentation of
their music, this is a really successful video as it gets their message
across in thirty seconds. I love the Jane Bradfords song and the video reminds me of watching stereolab or my
bloody valentine on no disco; evocative of a time and a place - which
is really all you can ask for from a pop promo"
Graham Smith (Photographer and Filmmaker) picked -
1. And So I Watch You From Afar - Set Guitars To Kill (by Slaine Browne + UrMuzic)
2. Oppenheimer - Breakfast in NYC (by Brian Philip Davis)
3. And So I Watch You From Afar - A Little Solidarity (by Tristan Crowe)
"Set Guitars To Kill is as good as their album is, ASIWYFA are a live band, this is where they
come alive and feed off the energy from the crowd and vice versa. This
video is the perfect reflection of their current live show: raw,
unpredictable but never lacking in passion."
Steven Rainey (BBC Radio 1 Rory McConnell Show Producer) picked -
1. LaFaro - Tupenny Nudger (by Crawford Anderson Dillon)
2.Panama Kings - Golden Recruit (by Will McConnell)
3. Oppenheimer - Look Up (by Paul McKay)
"The LaFaro one is a brilliant video, somehow complementing the menace of the sing, whilst simultaneously making me laugh. It's a Bobby Dazzler, as David Dickinson might say. As for the Panama Kings - sometimes, the simple ideas can be the best ones. I didn't go to this particular party, but I wish I had. The Oppenheimer video looks like more fun than I might have ever have!"
Matthew Patton (Photographer and Filmmaker) picked -
1. The Good Fight - Landslide (by Paul Brolly)
2. Fighting With Wire - Everyone Needs A Nemesis
3. A Plastic Rose - Kids Don't Behave Like This (by Will McConnell)
"For me 'Landslide', and 'Nemesis', win favour simply because on top of a well executed film, care has been taken with the relationship of the camera with the subject. All too often with music videos the visuals don't match the music in movement and fluidity, they feel out of sync. Particularly with 'Landslide' this has been addressed brilliantly in my opinion. 'Kids' meanwhile wins praise for taking into account the intimacy of recording whilst still being able to showcase the song's rising power."
David Jardine (NvTv Editor) picked -
1. Jetplane Landing - There Is no Courage Unless There Is Real Danger (Director: Raife Burchell
Editor: Gary Tobyn
Producer: The General)
2. Panda Kopanda - About My Temper (by John Mills)
3. Six Star Hotel - Crystal Fists (By Connie Hunter)
"Being
a tv editor, the JPL video is perhaps a strange choice for my number
one NI music video as there is one camera and no editing involved.
However, the combination of the great tune, the headbanging camera,
the energetic performance and the closing walk-off make it something
I've watched repeatedly since my first viewing."
